Visit the Land of Gandhi – Ahmedabad

Richly steeped in Hindu, Islamic, and British Colonial history, Ahmedabad awaits its discovery as the next big tourist hot spot. Spend a day at the tranquil Sabarmati Ashram among Gandhi memorabilia and you will find that the ambience slowly overwhelms your senses. A welcome break from the nostalgia evoking Sabarmati Ashram would be to take a trip to the placid old artificial Kankaria Lake complete with a mesmerising Island housing a summer palace. An open air theatre, boat club, aquarium, and zoo add to the lake’s charm and attract hordes of tourists.

To delve into an exotic display of textiles and artefacts head to Calico Textile Museum, the country’s number one textile museum.

One can also check out stately Islamic architectural brilliance by exploring the awe inspiring Bhadra fort famed for its legendary Teen Darwaza and the captivating Bhadrakali temple. Another stunner is the seductively beautiful Juma Masjid, a piece of wonder in yellow sandstone. For a unique experience, visit the Sidi Bashir mosque and shake its pillars with your hands. This unsolved phenomenon has led to its pillars being called Jhulta Minar (Swaying Pillar).

The shopping scene is a lively bustle, while the spicy Gujarati cuisine has to be sampled to be believed. Many airlines operate cheap flights to Ahmedabad, making it an easily reachable destination. Try visiting during the festival of Makar Sakraniti, and you will find that the sky is a colourful canopy of kites.
